About this pathway
The Prompt Design pathway is about getting large language models to hold good conversations: prompts that behave predictably, sound like your brand and do useful work for the people using them. It is built for conversation designers, AI trainers, product managers and persona specialists, and it requires no technical background.
Introduction to Prompt Design sets out first principles: using LLMs to discover use cases, shape assistant personalities, write functional prompts and add variations that build character. Design Patterns turns that into reusable craft, from confirmations and error recovery to clarity and cognitive load. Conversational Engineer then puts prompts to work inside real conversational architectures.
The skills transfer across any LLM-powered assistant, so the pathway stays useful as models and vendors change, raising both productivity and quality in the teams that apply it.

Reasons to get certified
FAQs
What does the Prompt Design exam cost?
$399 on Certified and $499 on Learn only, including one free resit. Passing it makes you a Certified Prompt Design Practitioner.
Does Prompt Design count toward CAIC?
Yes, as one of your two elective pathways. CAIC requires Foundation, Agentic Experience Design and any two others.
How long does the pathway take?
Three required modules, taken at your own pace: Introduction to Prompt Design, Design Patterns and Conversational Engineer.
Do I need to take the recommended courses?
No. Introduction to RAG and the Unprompted episodes Optimizing AI, Designing Multimodal AI Agents and Designing Hybrid Conversational AI are useful context, but they're optional, can be taken in any order, and aren't required for the exam.
Who is this pathway for?
Conversation designers, AI trainers, product managers and persona specialists who work with large language models. No technical background is needed.
Do I need CDI Method Foundation before starting this pathway?
The courses are open to any Learn only or Certified subscriber. You do need the CDI Method Foundation Practitioner certification before you can sit the Prompt Design exam, and it's included with Certified.
What is the difference between a certificate and a certification?
Each module earns a certificate of completion, which shows you finished it. A Practitioner Certification is earned by passing the pathway exam, which shows you've mastered it.
Does my certification expire?
No. Every Practitioner Certification you earn is yours permanently. Only CAIC status is renewed each year.
How does CAIC work?
old the CDI Method Foundation and AXD certifications plus any two others, and CAIC is conferred after a short review. There's no extra exam. It's kept current with a short annual declaration and either a Certified plan or the $99/year CAIC subscription.
