About this Pathway
A conversational AI is only as good as its understanding of the people it serves. Real users are messy: they misspell, ramble, change their minds and ask two things at once. AI Training is the discipline of turning that language into something an assistant or agent can recognise, act on and keep getting better at.
The pathway takes you through three required courses. AI Trainer Theory introduces the role of the AI Trainer in a conversational team, the language of AI training, and why fitting human language to software is so hard. AI Trainer Build covers the techniques and tools for training a language model and implementing designs on any platform, from simple answers to repair flows, entities and regex conditions. AI Trainer Improve shows you how to measure an assistant after go-live and keep optimising it with the right technical and business metrics.
The skills apply to rule-based, intent-based and generative systems alike. AI Training is one of five certified pathways in the CDI Academy, and counts towards the Certified Conversational AI Consultant (CAIC) credential.

FAQs
What does the AI Training exam cost?
$399 on Certified and $499 on Learn only, including one free resit. Passing the AI Trainer Exam makes you a Certified AI Training Practitioner.
Does AI Training count toward CAIC?
Yes, as one of your two elective pathways. CAIC requires Foundation, Agentic Experience Design and any two others.
How long does the pathway take?
Three required modules, AI Trainer Theory, Build and Improve, with 63 video lessons, taken at your own pace.
Do I need to take the recommended courses?
No. Introduction to RAG and the Unprompted episodes Optimizing AI, Building Predictable Conversational AI and Designing Multilingual Conversational AI are useful context, but they're optional, can be taken in any order, and aren't required for the exam.

AI trainers, conversation designers and the analysts who own assistant performance, on both generative and declarative platforms.
Do I need CDI Method Foundation before starting this pathway?
The courses are open to any Learn only or Certified subscriber. You do need the CDI Method Foundation Practitioner certification before you can sit the AI Trainer Exam, and it's included with Certified.
What is the difference between a certificate and a certification?
Each module earns a certificate of completion, which shows you finished it. A Practitioner Certification is earned by passing the pathway exam, which shows you've mastered it.
Does my certification expire?
No. Every Practitioner Certification you earn is yours permanently. Only CAIC status is renewed each year.
How does CAIC work?
old the CDI Method Foundation and AXD certifications plus any two others, and CAIC is conferred after a short review. There's no extra exam. It's kept current with a short annual declaration and either a Certified plan or the $99/year CAIC subscription.
